Beautiful Science

Global Biotech Week is once again partnering with Nuit Blanche Saskatoon to bring you beautiful science. This exciting collaboration brings the worlds of art and science together and showcases research images that are art in their own right.

Scientists will be on hand during the event to demonstrate DNA extraction from strawberries and give some information about the science images!

This piece focuses on human/wildlife interactions and provides an opportunity to practice a healthy and safe coexistence. NBYXE goers approach large white animal sculptures that are animated by video projection of the same animals in nature. Viewers create their own wildlife encounter while practicing to be better stewards of the diverse Saskatchewan biomes.

Jokers Poker

Come one and come all to see comedians in their natural habitat. You will have a chance to see how the comedy sausage is made through lighthearted banter, conversations, collaborations, and suggestions from you of course! The poker game will be lit up for all to see and the comedians will be mic'd up so you’ll hear everything. Shawn Cuthand and Aimee Grimard will be joined by other relentless, money-grubbin’ comedians for a night of laughs you won't wanna miss.

“Ilaw ng tahanan” (light of the house) is a common Filipino idiom about mothers and the role they play in the household. Cardboard boxes are common travel packages used by many OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers); the balikbayan boxes being an integral part of the culture as a way to send gifts to family back home. The immigrant experience is represented by combining both ideas into a giant lamp built of cardboard.

This performance explores the idea of communicating with family back home, and how the hardships are often disregarded or omitted from the pretty pictures of being abroad, carrying the weight of expectations and commitment for the sake of family.

Blueprints are important in the construction of any structure whether it’s a bridge, home, or public space. Without a plan, building materials can go to waste, key details may go unnoticed, and the original intention of the construction can become distorted or incomplete. Blueprints are the measured, visual representation of the hopes and goals of everyone involved in the construction of a project.

For this printmaking event, SK Printmakers will use the idea of blueprints representing planning, growth, and visualizing goals to create images that will be exposed onto silkscreens. Throughout the evening, Nuit Blanche participants will work with SKP members to screenprint these images onto 10” x 10” sheets of recycled blueprint paper.

Nuit Blanche participants will be able to take their printed blueprints with them.

404 Food Not Found is a commentary on the rise of food costs, mass consumerism and the idea of not getting what you paid for. Through this interactive piece, the audience is invited to partake in the performance but, is left with disappointment. Canadians have been vocal about the rise of food costs and how it impacts them personally. However, we have no other options and pay these outrageous prices out of necessity. Food quality has been lowered and Canadians feel the impact. Our work is meant to invoke feelings of disappointment through our own take on misleading practices in consumerism.

Mud Matters is a spectacle of miniature vignettes that are both whimsical and pensive in nature. Charley Farrero and Evan Quick have a similar approach to their making process. They assemble small clay elements into a 3-dimensional ceramic collage. These playful elements entice the viewer to investigate further and allow us to see the deeper meaning behind their works.

An avant-garde marching band of experimental musicians exploring the unexpected art spaces of Nuit Blanche. They will be travelling throughout the festival spaces presenting impromptu, mobile, mini-concerts. They will play with the expectations that come with a marching band, including costuming, relating sound to movement, playing as part of a cultural ritual, and accompanying the spectacle of the festival, all through the lens of an experimental improvising music ensemble that finds itself outside in downtown Saskatoon.

A selection of works by artists Asia Wills, Tess Johnson and Julianna Phillips, three students who took both ART 231 (Animation & Digital Space) and ART 237 (Digital and Integrated Practice) in the 2023/24 academic year. The pieces use a variety of types of animation (stop motion, drawn, and 3D), digital manipulation, sound design, miniatures, crochet, food, and many other mediums and approaches that combine to create three distinct styles.

"I Refuse to be Invisible" presents three major bodies of photographic work by artist Jeff Thomas: The Bear Portraits, Indians on Tour and Strong Hearts: Powwow Portraits. Developed over the course of four decades, these photographic suites explore and recontextualize the complex dialogue between historical and contemporary representations of Indigenous identity in photography, while simultaneously investigating the absence of images produced by Indigenous people.

The Museum of Antiquities is a hidden gem on the prairies, featuring a collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Near Eastern artifacts. The collection includes full scale replicas of famous sculptures like the Venus de Milo, the Sleeping Hermaphrodite, and panels from the frieze of the Parthenon. It is also home to a large original coin collection, original ancient glass, and pottery from across the ancient Mediterranean.

This solo exhibition by artist Audie Murray features recent work that address and consider the revolutionary potential of dreaming. It is titled Pawatamihk after the Michif word for 'dream'. Nanaimo Art Gallery curator Jesse Birch writes that “dreaming is dangerous for colonial worldviews as it allows a window of time and space to listen to the earth and to ancestors, to imagine the world differently, and to prepare to enact change.

As humans, we are inherently driven to assign meaning to our surroundings. Whether it is the concrete or the abstract, the external or the internal, the familiar or the unknown, we find significance in everything. This act of meaning-making is a fundamental aspect of "The Characters" as it explores the meanings and values we assign to an individual's character based on their outward appearance. Essential to this investigation is philosopher David Hume's belief that character is deemed virtuous or vicious upon the specific pleasure or unease our interpretation evokes. Consequently, these representations may be interpreted as malevolent, benevolent, whimsical, or nightmarish, blurring the lines between the extremes of our perception of character.

A celestial symphony! Take in a cluster of stars, the result of approximately 600 children attending the USask art camps this summer. The other celestial objects shown in this galaxy were made by the staff who launched and ensured the art camps were stellar. This galaxy represents all of the people who have rocketed the art camps to new heights.

Museum of Natural Sciences (W. P. Thompson Biology Building)

During the Winter 2024 term, students enrolled in ART 331/461 explored Character Animator, After Effects, and Blender, embarking on a journey of experimentation within these programs. The course provided a path for students to progressively merge 2D elements into 3D environments, with each project serving as a stepping stone to build on their skills and push their imaginations.

This installation is a fully-functional digital arcade machine. It features an interactive animation which shows users, without words, equations, or numbers, how novel materials behave at a quantum level, reflecting some aspects of current research at USask. This interactive installation allows everyone to participate in learning about quantum sciences in a readily accessible way.

In ISAP’s Troposphere, visitors are invited to help a new kind of cloud take shape. Connect grounding words (nuclei) with storied ribbons of transparent film and paper, building an illuminated and embodied mahkaskwâw (great cloud) that reflects the many ways our experiences intersect, reflect, and celebrate relationship, similarity, and difference.
